Aydın farmers expressed that a 'produce-and-profit' era has begun, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic. They mentioned the shift in people's mindset towards not only trying to satisfy hunger but also aiming to eat and drink for healthy nutrition. This change in perspective has increased the importance and profits of agricultural production.
After the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the growing interest in natural and organic products has increased the variety of products in Aydın. Aydın, with its strong agricultural potential and the ability to grow products throughout the four seasons, has seen an increase in black cabbage production. Farmers in the Kardeşköy neighborhood of the Efeler district started harvesting black cabbage and noted that they did not face any market problems in selling their products.
Ferdi and Neriman Çubukcu, a couple who returned to agricultural production after facing difficulties competing with supermarket chains, stated that they used to open market stalls in local markets. However, due to being unable to compete with supermarket chains, many people like them, residing in places like Acarlar, who engaged in both agricultural production and market trading, had to leave market trading. Currently, they do not see any problems in their area, but they anticipate that in the future, when small businesses withdraw from local markets, citizens will have to comply with the prices dictated by supermarket chains. Therefore, they make efforts to sell what they produce more to local businesses.
In the field, black cabbage, sold at 6-7 TL per unit, is observed to be sold in supermarket chains at 19 TL per kilogram.
Besides its taste, black cabbage is noted for its many benefits, particularly in preventing upper respiratory tract infections.
