At Siirt University Research and Application Center, Romanov breed sheep are being raised to contribute to livestock farming. Known for their high reproductive efficiency and early sexual maturity at around 3-4 months, Romanov sheep are preferred for lamb meat production, excelling in year-round mating and yielding twin, triplet, and quadruplet offspring.
Dr. Assistant Professor Mehmet Irmak, indicating the breeding of Romanov sheep at Siirt University Research and Application Center, stated, 'Romanov sheep are a breed originally from Russia known for their high reproductive yield. They are a type of sheep with a high rate of twinning. Therefore, they were brought to Siirt with the idea that they could contribute to regional livestock.'
Highlighting that the breed is adapted to cold climates, Irmak mentioned, 'However, Siirt and its surroundings have warm climate conditions. Therefore, for optimal performance and breeding practices, the animals need professional support. We recommend understanding this breed first before getting involved in this venture. If successful, they will benefit from the advantage of giving birth twice a year and the chance to achieve multiple pregnancies.'
