'White gold' Taşköprü garlic meets the soil

Women working in the planting of Taşköprü garlic, which is considered the highest quality garlic in the world, are bringing the garlic together with the soil by hand.

The planting of internationally renowned geographical indication-protected Taşköprü garlic, considered the highest quality garlic in the world, has begun. According to data from the Turkish Statistical Institute, Taşköprü garlic, which meets 25% of Turkey's demand, is the livelihood of more than 4,000 families. The planting of Taşköprü garlic, which will continue until mid-March, is done by hand using traditional methods, which are believed to increase productivity. Women working in the district, earning a daily wage of 600 Turkish Liras, are bringing the garlic together with the soil by hand. The harvest of Taşköprü garlic, which is aimed to be planted in an area of approximately 25,000 hectares, will start from July.

"We get better yield when we plant by hand"

Aliye Güllü, who stated that garlic planting also provides job opportunities for women in the district, said, "Our garlic season has started. We have been planting for two days. As you know, our garlic is world-famous. I am the team leader. We are doing the planting with my team. Then we will do the weeding. We work like this for 10 months. Tractors are not productive. We get better yield when we plant by hand. We start on February 5th and continue until March. We are bringing our 'white gold' garlic together with our soil. Hopefully, it will be a profitable season. May God grant prosperity to the villagers, and may they also grant us. We work like siblings. We receive a regular salary like regular insured workers for 10 months. Our daily wage is 600 Turkish Liras. We are considering increasing the wage a little more during harvesting.
